I live in a three-bedroom house with my husband, son, and mother in law. The three of us (My husband, son, and I) shared one room and a loft. The Loft area is our 2nd living room, and we also made it as a playroom and a office space.

The thing is, you have to make the best of what you already have, and this is what we did.

Even though the loft is not a big area, we still managed to fit in a living room, playroom, and my office space. It’s all about the layout and lots of natural lights. Thank goodness we have a high ceiling, and big windows, so it’s nice and bright, it made our loft look big.

Small Office Layout TIPS:

TIP #1 GET MORE NATURAL LIGHT IN YOUR HOUSE

If you don’t have enough natural lights coming in, try to hang mirrors on your wall, the shinier surfaces you can add to rooms, the more light will reflect into the room. And, as much as possible, place your desk by the window.

As you can see, I placed my desk right by the window. It helps me work effectively especially in the morning because of the natural lights. The light suppresses melatonin that your brain “Pineal Glands” produces, and this keeps you awake. Cool eh?

TIP # 2 USE THE CORNERS OF THE ROOM

Use the corners of your house for your office space layout. In this case, you are not wasting any space in your home, and it looks cleaner and organized.

Imagine that my desk is placed in the middle of a small room and with my big computer and other things. It wouldn’t look right, wouldn’t it? So, please try to use the corners of your house.

Also, when placing your desk in the corners, it will give you more space to walk around the room and more space for organization.

Organization TIPS:

TIP # 3 USE YOUR WALL FOR DECORATION AND ORGANIZATION

This one is my favorite. Use your wall for decoration and organization. I use a pegboard to decorate and organize my things effectively, and it’s so much fun to create! Tip # 3 is where you can be creative, and this way it shows your personality and what you love.

I added some arts, and sayings on my pegboard and even a plant to give it that look that I’m going for. I like brightness and a little bit of pop of colors. Also, this made my office space layout look very modern.

The arts and motivational sayings I put on my pegboard keep me motivated when I feel lazy. Admit it; it’s not easy when you’re in a lazy mode to get back up on your feet and start doing what you have to do.

So, yah! Just need to find the things that will keep you motivated.

TIP # 4 FILE DIGITALLY OR USE A FILING BOX

File your paper works digitally and remotely. By doing this, it saves you a lot of space, and you can easily find things you need.

If filing digitally doesn’t work for you, try filing them in a box and label them accordingly. I bought my filing box at office depot, and I also use a label maker to mark them accordingly. I also use a separate binder for filing my most necessary things like my insurances, Electronic receipts “Just in case I have to return a product, then I know I kept my receipts in one place, Jewelry purchases, Eye exams “Since I renew it every year.”

So, do you get my point now? The separate binder is only for the things I need the most, and I file the marriage certificate, school stuff, taxes, and other things that I won’t be needing on a daily basis in a filing box instead.

TIP # 5 USE BOXES FOR RANDOM THINGS

Use boxes for random things like cords, chargers, etc. I like to keep everything neat and clean. You can also label those boxes so you can find the things you need fast and easy.

You can get those beautiful boxes at Michaels or Amazon.

  • Lovely ideas! For me having enough space and a lot of natural light is the key. I also love how fresh and modern the ideas you shared are! 🙂

  • I have a spare bedroom that I’ve converted into a type of home office and prop storage area but it still feels too cluttered. I will try to apply a few of these ideas when I am back home.

  • Excellent post! Working in natural light brings a lot of positivity and placing your desk by the window can have a huge impact on your productivity. I also love the idea of using vertical space for organization.

  • This is awesome! I was actually planning to redo my home office (workspace) this summer as well as the “family office” (bill paying/homework) space, and these tips will come in handy! Especially the pegboard. We already have one Julia-Child style in our kitchen to hang pots & pans on, and I’ve been debating something like this for one or both of the office spaces but have done so with trepidation b/c I wasn’t sure how it would look – I think you’ve given me the courage to proceed! 🙂

  • I love this. I love the idea of the pegboard. My office is also shared with my two boys as we are a homeschooling family so space is limited.

  • I love the utility look of the peg board wall. I don’t think I could pull it off because my office is a corner of my bedroom, but if I had my office in its own room, I could really get use out of the peg board.

  • This is a really great post. I love the ideas you chose for making the most of a small space! I love the idea of using the wall space for organisation and decoration!

  • Love your post! Everyone needs more tips on organization! I really like that pegboard idea, still looking for a place where to put it. 🙂

  • Thanks for the tip of using a wall for organization. I’m going to try that. I need work space in a small area and this may drop the trick.

  • I have definitely considered using the corner of our livingroom as my office but there are windows on either side of the corner. It will make a lot of natural light for sure.

  • I love that peg board! And light is a must – we just downsized and I am so grateful that our “office” fits in the “playroom” in the loft upstairs, with a big window right in front of the desk. It’s a small room but it makes a huge difference!

  • These are great tips. I only have a small den shared with the rest of my family so now I know how to keep organized. I like how you suggest utilizing corners and the walls to help with organization. I will definitely keep this in mind when I re-decorate!
